Day care centre gives a more human existence

Imagine that you are retired and all your saving money has become worthless because of the enormous inflation rates. The cost of living has increased tenfold and your pension is lowered to € 10 to € 15,- per month. This is the story in a nutshell of many elderly in Moldova. To give these people a more human existence 1We supports the daycare centre Sunrise in the rural city of Straseni in cooperation with the Nhadam foundation.

The former Soviet republic of Moldova situated between Romania and Ukrania is one of the poorest countries in Europe. As the consequence of political instability and corruption the country is severely empowered and a big part of the population is living below the poverty standards. Most of the villages and cities don't have any water supplies or drainage and depend on wells. Only the capital of Chisinau has a working central heating system. In addition to this the temperature in the winters sometimes drops to minus 35°C.

Poor pensions
Because of the high unemployment, low wages and poorly paid pensions a lot of youngsters leave their home country. This is the reason that the deterioration of life standards hit the elderly and children the hardest. A lot of senior citizens live in social desolation. Their pension is not sufficient for their daily need for food and warmth. Often they don't have access to drinking water or medical care and there are hardly any sanitary facilities. Due to all these circumstances the average life expectancy rates in the last 10 years declined to over 5 years.

In the Sunrise day centre the elderly can take a shower, have a warm meal and do their laundry five days a week. Furthermore they have access to medical care and can participate in activities. To guarantee the operational costs on a long term every donation is welcome!

In Moldova a lot of old people are living in social isolation. Take this man for instance (see film). He was locked up by his own family in a small barn with nothing to eat or drink. The family didn’t have sufficient food so this heavily disabled man was left to die. He kept himself alive by the rain water and a couple of insects he could find in the barn. Finally he was released by the staff of the Rainbow house, a nursing home linked to the Sunrise day centre. In this place the almost dead man reached life again…
