'Welcome to Rio de Janeiro' on The Business Channel (UK)

‘Welcome to Rio de Janeiro’, the latest TV program of 1We-TV, has been broadcasted in total 41 times on The Business (Sky) Channel in England. The film is sketching a positive image of the city, known as one of the most violent cities in the world.

Bulging slums
Almost half of the inhabitants of Rio live in one of the 1,400 bulging slums (favellas). The city is dominated by drug and weapon dealing and is one of the most violent cities worldwide. On a yearly basis more than 60,000 murders are committed by the death squadrons of military, police and drug cartels from the favellas.

Despite this situation Rio de Janeiro still is an enchanting place for visitors. However, next to the crowd of tourists the street scene is also determined by several thousands of street children. The local authorities do not care for them. Luckily there are still people who do care and try their best to make the lives of these youngsters bearable as much as possible. For example people such as Dutch backpacker Steijn de Leeuwe and Canadian photographer Chantal James.

Drug mafia
Watching the program one will also see and hear an interview with Nanko van Buuren, founder of IBISS. With his organization Nanko is facing the cold war on drugs and the corrupt police system on a daily basis. With tens of projects in the favellas he is trying to prevent the forming of ghettos and to cross bridges between the slums and the civilized world; the so called asphalt.

Together with IBISS 1We is starting a project realizing the ‘1We Football Playgrounds’ in the favellas as a weapon in the battle against the war on drugs.
